Each Friday, I’ll be briefly profiling a specific location somewhere in the world that has been featured in a movie or TV show.

This week, the site is 2640 Steiner Street in San Francisco.

San Francisco has served as the backdrop for quite a few well-known movies and TV shows over the past few decades. But one of my favorites has to be the Robin Williams classic “Mrs. Doubtfire,” in which a divorced man dresses in drag in order to get hired as his ex’s housekeeper/babysitter so he can still be around his kids.

The film showcases a lot of San Francisco, and, yes, the house where the Hillard family lives on screen can be found in real life.

And how about this — it can be found at the address Sally Field’s character Miranda gives “Mrs. Doubtfire” in the film: 2640 Steiner Street, in the Pacific Heights neighborhood of San Francisco.

Word is that the owners of the house were paid $100,000 in exchange for the crew filming their home. It probably wasn’t nearly enough, considering how many people now seek out the house to photograph.

The owners clearly have a good sense of humor about it, though. When you visit the house, pull out your smartphone and search the nearby wireless networks… Take a guess which network belongs to 2640 Steiner Street!
